I have questions about my sugar gliders?
Question by : I have questions about my sugar gliders?
I have 2 female sugar gliders it has been 3 days since i’ve gotten them. I feed them all the correct foods that they need to eat, there fruits and vegies, mix with calcium supplement, mealworms, and sugar glider mixture. Well im tryin to bond with them and pet them, but once and a while now they crab at me and my husband. I can get close to them but it only seems that they want to nip, our finger one actually made my husband bleed a lil, but how can i get them to not nip us. and when they start to crab i just normally continue to pet there pouch and talk to them nicely, but what can i do about the nipping?
Well they havent been let out i never try to grab them i just let them smell my hand once in a while while they are in there cage, but during the day i get them in there taveling pouch and once in a while i rub the bag to kinda wake them up to give them food and water, but other that that during the day i can sometimes pet them when they are sleeping they just wake up look at me and then just tuck there heads back downward, i actually have just bought them can o’worms which are the cooked mealworms, and i bought live ones, tho i am got to have a worm farm, so i wont ever have to buy live worms again, but during the meantime that i didnt have the worms i gave them eggs they loved it, and also i bought them an 12″ excersizing wheel, not wired, solid plastic, and hanging dishes and whole bunch of dried fruit, fresh fruits and vegies. the privous owner was giving them acorns, and turtle pellets, and bearded dragon pellets as food, i think think thats the reason why they had such a strong od

Nothing. The best you can do is bond and tame..or wear gloves.
Plus you just got them 3 days ago. And they will bite if uncomfortable or want to be left alone. Nipping is normal in sugar gliders. And normally, sugar gliders don’t like to be held. They’ll get use to you, and nipping should reduce.

Sugar gliders are one of my favourite animals! I got to help nurse two young orphaned ones and they nipped too. This is usually a sign saying ‘I am not comfortable with that’ and eases down in about a week or two when they become more comfortable with human presence. In the mean time, keep hand feeding them but be careful. The best food I found in means of getting them to trust you is to feed them live mealworms buy holding your hand out flat on the ground. You can gradually work up from this and it takes no time at all if done frequently!
Good luck and I hope I helped!
This just means that they are scared. You need to give them some space until they are fully comfortable with you. Do NOT grab at them. This will hurt your relationship. They are nocturnal so make sure you NEVER bother them in the day time. When they are NOT having fun they will let you know with a scary noise which im sure you have herd.
