Why is my pet sugar glider STILL scared of me?

Question by Katye: Why is my pet sugar glider STILL scared of me?
Ok. To start things off, my name is Katye. I purchased my sugar glider, Jinxy, from a breeder on October 6th of this year. The people were very nice, but I’m starting to get the idea they didn’t handle her at all! There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t have her out of the cage in her pouch for at least 2 hours. I play with her in the cage all the time. Feed her fresh food and always have dry food in her cage.

Since it has been 2 months, I figured she would be bonded with me by now! But I got her out tonight just to see what would happen and she got scared again and ran away. After forever trying to catch her she finally climbed into her pouch. It’s discouraging because I spend so much time loving her. I research and devote all my time to her, and it doesn’t seem to be working. Sometimes it even makes me upset :(

PLEASE HELP!!!

From what I know if they aren’t hand tamed from birth they usually never will be. I think they have to be handled as soon as they are out of pouch to learn to enjoy it. You can use a tent and work with her while she can ‘run away’ and still feel safe, I’ve heard that’s recommended but only with babies. Can you love her if she doesn’t love you? As a pet owner of an exotic and undomesticated creature this is something you should have seen as a possibility… I have hedgehogs and some of them will simply never enjoy human contact but I love them anyway because that is their nature. I also know that sugar gliders must always be kept in pairs or groups because they are so social, getting another would likely calm her and seeing a hand tame glider with you should help with her training too.

How long does it take sugar gliders to become nice?

Question by Joleen M: How long does it take sugar gliders to become nice?
I just purchased a sugar glider about 3 months ago, and still to this day she will not behave like everyone says sugar gliders should. All she will do is crab when her pouch she sleeps in is touched and bite my hands when i try to pet her. Also I cannot touch her when she is running around in the cage. I have had times where i held her for serveral hours and have been very patient in getting her to bond with me but nothing seems to work. She even seems to be getting meaner. ANY suggestions. Did i just get a very mean one?

Try and get a hand towel, keep it with you for 24 hours then during the day when its sleeping put it in the towel then put on a shirt with pockets and put it in your pocket. let it get your sent and hear your voice. if it doesn’t get use to you soon it will die or self mutilate. i have had two, the first one i got i had for a year and she was real sweet she fell and broke her tail and died, the second one i had no matter how har i tried i could not tame him and he died, i held him in my hand till his last breath. you must try your hardest and soon. if it doesn’t work get it a mate and train their offspring. babies are easier to train. good luck.
