Question by happygirl888: How do I move my move cats and dog cross country from Texas to New York City?
On Feb 1st 2012 I am moving to New York City on February 1st from Austin Texas to East Village in Manhattan, New York City.

We will be renting a large moving truck. It has two small seats in the cab which will be taken by myself and the other person I am moving with. I have two cats and a 75 pound labrador. There is hardly space for the two of us let alone our animals. We are not taking a car of our own. It will be a three 10 hour day trip with 2 overnight stops at pet friendly hotels. We are thinking about putting the two cats in a large spacious dog carrier with blankets and a litter box in it in the storage part of the moving truck with the furniture box. However I am VERY worried about doing this because of the stress on them and once we get into the northeast it will be very cold back there. We would check on them every few hours. I don’t know what to do about my dog. Her presence in the back would greatly comfort my cats. Should I split the time and put her back there with them some of the time with her own nest of blankets too and the rest of the time in my lap in the cab? I can’t carry her in my lap the whole time for three days because she is huge and nervous and moves around alot. I don’t know what to do. I will do anything that will make this easier on my animals. I’ve thought about hot water bottles under the cat and dog beds. I won’t fly them there because I’ve know someone who’s animal died in the cargo carrier. My pets are my family and I am so stressed about them going through this experience. Any suggestions are so appreciated!

Have you ever been in a closed moving van… if only for a few minutes it’s a horrible feeling. Your dog especially should not be there and it would not be good for the cats either.
- What you really should do is rent a car one-way and you and your friend trade off driving it with the cats = they will be screaming so you will want to switch every few hours and then the dog can ride in the truck.

Don’t say it’s too expensive because I know the $ 300 or so you are going to pay to keep the animals safe, is well worth it.

Cat’s and Pet Carrier fear?

Question by Dave: Cat’s and Pet Carrier fear?
My Tabby cat is scared of the pet carrier he goes inside lies down it and even has a nap but when I close the door and take him to the car he panics he goes crazy and bites the cage door to be let out.

Is there anything I can do to get him to relax?

Hmm- You might try a tranquilizer, preferably one from the vet.

Our cats start crying when we close them in the pet carriers too. But they don’t try biting the door.

Good luck!

2 stray cats??

Question by Brandi: 2 stray cats??
OK! these guys have been hanging around the house on and off for the past month or so. They are skiddish, but tame. So I’ve decided to keep them, and everyone agreed tonight that we would bring them in. So how do I get my other 3 cats to be ok with this? Frisky my lifelong pal is the one i’m worried about most. He has adapted to the other 2 cats quiet well. Most importantly I hear growling in the pet taxi i have them in. Should I just put them back outside, and let them be free roam or what? By the way I have room for them we have a 4 bedroom 2 full bath 2 story house.

I would introduce them slowly, leave them in an open carrier (one they can see out of and the other cats can see in) for a while, then maybe leave them in one room until they get used to the house. Let them out a bit at a time so all of the cats get used to each other. I would also suggest getting them on flea medicine asap.
