How do I move my move cats and dog cross country from Texas to New York City?
Question by happygirl888: How do I move my move cats and dog cross country from Texas to New York City?
On Feb 1st 2012 I am moving to New York City on February 1st from Austin Texas to East Village in Manhattan, New York City.
We will be renting a large moving truck. It has two small seats in the cab which will be taken by myself and the other person I am moving with. I have two cats and a 75 pound labrador. There is hardly space for the two of us let alone our animals. We are not taking a car of our own. It will be a three 10 hour day trip with 2 overnight stops at pet friendly hotels. We are thinking about putting the two cats in a large spacious dog carrier with blankets and a litter box in it in the storage part of the moving truck with the furniture box. However I am VERY worried about doing this because of the stress on them and once we get into the northeast it will be very cold back there. We would check on them every few hours. I don’t know what to do about my dog. Her presence in the back would greatly comfort my cats. Should I split the time and put her back there with them some of the time with her own nest of blankets too and the rest of the time in my lap in the cab? I can’t carry her in my lap the whole time for three days because she is huge and nervous and moves around alot. I don’t know what to do. I will do anything that will make this easier on my animals. I’ve thought about hot water bottles under the cat and dog beds. I won’t fly them there because I’ve know someone who’s animal died in the cargo carrier. My pets are my family and I am so stressed about them going through this experience. Any suggestions are so appreciated!

Have you ever been in a closed moving van… if only for a few minutes it’s a horrible feeling. Your dog especially should not be there and it would not be good for the cats either.
- What you really should do is rent a car one-way and you and your friend trade off driving it with the cats = they will be screaming so you will want to switch every few hours and then the dog can ride in the truck.
Don’t say it’s too expensive because I know the $ 300 or so you are going to pay to keep the animals safe, is well worth it.
