Question by Elizabeth H: Nursing Mother dog’s breast/milk pouch more firm than others?
My dog gave birth to 9 healthy puppies 3 weeks ago Friday. Everything has been fine until tonight when I was petting her and noticed one of her breasts is more firm than the rest. All of the other’s fill full and floppy, but one seems lumpy and firm. Milk comes out fine, but I’m concerned, and since it’s 1am I don’t have the option of getting to a vet tonight, but can in the morning. If anyone has any advice, please respond!
I also wanted to add that the nipple itself looks completely normal, is not infected, red or enlarged at all.

If it is not red, hot, or painful then she is probably just engorged. It should be fine to wait until the morning to call the vet if you are still concerned.

It is probably nothing, but good to be aware of such things.

What do you mean a pouch? My cat Mookie was a little overweight and he had a fat tumor. It wasn’t dangerous to his health in any way, it was just a lump on his back. He was a completely normal cat.

My hamster has an “everted cheek pouch” HELP!?

Question by Traci: My hamster has an “everted cheek pouch” HELP!?
I left for work yesterday morning, and she was fine. When I got home from work, I noticed something large and pink hanging out of her mouth. We bought her a week ago at Petsmart, and they have a 14-day pet guarantee policy, so I took her back. They thought it was a tumor at first glance, so they said they’d let the vet take a look, and call me back. They called back about an hour later (stayed open later for my hammy! :-) ) and told me that apparently, her cheek pouch came out of her mouth, turning inside out. They said they tried to put her under, and place it back inside, but when she awoke, it came out again. They told me they were going to take her to an outside veterenarian, so that he could perform surgery. Can anyone tell me if this is a common occurrence in hamsters, and/or if she will recover? They really didn’t tell us much about her chances, only that there is a risk each time she is anethsized, that she could die. Can anyone give me any info about the “everted pouch”?
It is called “everted” that is what the pet store vet told me, and that is what I found on the internet on Hamster and Small Pet care websites. It is not “inverted.”

I’m sorry, I’ve never heard of that, but I hope your hammy is okay.

sugar glider joey crabbing in pouch hysterically?

Question by Hey Sexi! :P : sugar glider joey crabbing in pouch hysterically?
I have a new sugar glider joey that 9 weeks out of pouch,i’ve had him for 4days and he’s my first one ever. I haven’t held him yet although I tried once and he freaked out on me and bit me to the point of drawing blood, but i’ve been able to semi pet him and feed him apricots but when I put him in the pouch during the day if I slightly move he starts crabbing like crazy! What should I do? Ive put a worn shirt over the cage for him to get my scent but it doesn’t seem to be working :/ Is it just to early for him to like me?

Few things here…
1. Bonding does NOT happen instantly. It can take months, and in some severe cases, YEARS. And in fact, bonding is NOT guaranteed. There are some sugar gliders that will just never bond.
2. 4 days is SUCH a short period of time. A month is such a short period of time, even.
3. He is scared. Think of it this way, you’re like King Kong to him, he doesn’t know or care that you want to be his buddy.. He just knows you’re big, and bigger things eat smaller things. So, yeah, he’ll crab and bite as these are his only real defenses. Go at his pace.
4. He’s kept as a single glider from the sounds of it. Sugar gliders are colony creatures.. So what you have now is a glider in a brand new place, where he can’t see any of his kind.. Yes, he’s scared. Yes, it does make things worse. And, yes, you’re going to want to get him a friend. It doesn’t need to be immediately, but sugar gliders NEED sugar glider friends. They often become depressed and self mutilate when kept alone for a long period of time — even with constant human interaction.
